Students will take part in a series of classroom sessions that focus on contemporary practice and pedagogical foundations, which will equip them with core knowledge of transition from primary physical education. Examples of current contemporary practice in the field that will be addressed include, child safeguarding, child protection, lesson planning, the National Curriculum for Physical Education and Physical Literacy. Students will also learn to apply core principles through a series of practical sessions. They will learn to deliver activities appropriate for primary school aged children including, fundamental movements, ball games, dance, striking and fielding and outdoor adventure activities (Team Work).

  • Sport and Health in the Community

Sport is a huge cultural practice, with connections to (among other things) community, environment, finance, media (traditional and new), celebrity, the law, social attitudes, globalization, politics, inequality and problems of discrimination. This module examines sport’s connections with issues such as those and illustrates how sport is both continuous with the rest of society and a ‘social world’. Students are invited, with the help of theoretical concepts and a wide range of writers, to consider the increasingly complex world of sport and its organic connections with the rest of society.

  • Introduction to Motor Skills & Sport and Exercise Psychology
  • Develop your knowledge of the principles of sport and exercise psychology and motor skill acquisition and how they can be applied in the context of health-related physical activity/exercise and sport performance. Participate in sport/exercise practical activities to examine psychological constructs and their relationship with health-related physical activity/exercise and sport performance. Established theories of motor skill acquisition are examined and methods of guidance in developing motor skills are introduced.

  • Introduction to Sport and Exercise Physiology and Movement Analysis
  • Explore human physiology, anatomy, and biomechanics at rest and during exercise. Learn about the structure and function of each of the body systems to develop theoretical and practical knowledge of the anatomy of the human body. Use anatomical models, images, and other media to identify individual structures and then apply palpation techniques to locate on real human subjects. Explore changes in systems in response to exercise and the physiological adaptations to different types of exercise. Develop your understanding of the principles of biomechanics through a review of the basic mechanics and the way in which the fundamental laws of mechanics can be applied to understand and evaluate human movement. This is supported by further development of anatomical principles including range of motion and injury prevention through conditioning of body structure.

2nd Year

  • Research and Professional Development

Appreciate the fundamental issues in research design and analysis, together with gaining practical work-related experience either through a work-based placement and/or completion of further continual professional development (CPD), for example, a relevant external qualification (or training) in personal training, sports massage or equivalent. Explore the theoretical foundations and gain practical experience in research and scientific investigation. Develop knowledge around the research process and learn how to construct an investigation from an initial idea or research question, to the point of completing and presenting the study. The module will present the basic principles of both quantitative and qualitative research design and analysis, and will enable students to apply the most appropriate research skills in order to undertake their own investigations.

  • Theory and Practice of Sports Coaching

Critically discuss long term athlete development and appraise the coach athlete relationship and its impact on performance. Appraise and discuss pedagogic practices including methods and processes. Apply principles of planning and time management in the planning, production and delivery of videoed and live coaching sessions. Plan and prepare an inclusive, safe and effective videoed and live coaching session tailored to the needs of a range of participants within the scope of practice. Reflect on effective videoed and live coaching sessions for a target audience.

  • Theory and Practice of Physical Education 2

Students will take part in a series of classroom sessions where they will extend their knowledge and understanding of contemporary issues and age-appropriate pedagogical strategies relevant for secondary Physical Education. Examples of current contemporary issues in the field that will be addressed within the module include, lesson planning, assessment, and holistic child development. Trainees will take part in a series of practical sessions where they will be expected to extend their ability to apply an increased range of pedagogical knowledge and skills to deliver activities appropriate for secondary school aged pupils. Examples of current practical sessions include, football (with a focus on games-based delivery coupled with use of appropriate teaching styles), other ball games (including basketball) with a focus on ‘Teaching Games for Understanding’ through enhanced delivery, dance, gymnastics (from the perspective of Key Stage 3) and outdoor adventure activities (rock climbing).

  • Pedagogy and Practice

Students will take part in a series of classroom sessions where they will extend their knowledge and understanding of contemporary issues and age-appropriate pedagogical strategies relevant for coaching/teaching children. Module content may change between academic years based on changes to the secondary education and sports coaching landscape. Examples of current contemporary issues in the field that will be addressed within the module include, the teaching standard, the coaching standards, holistic child development, and government policies.

  • Biomechanical Analysis of Human Movement

Appraise the advantages and limitations of biomechanical instrumentation for technique observation, review and analysis of human movement. Relate how the static and dynamic forces are exerted on the human body. Question how the body moves and the techniques involved in performing sport and exercise activities. Demonstrate an ability to collate experimental evidence and highlight conclusions and limitations of biomechanical experimentation. Examine using instrumentation, key biomechanical characteristics in sport and exercise biomechanics. Analyse and present in a scientific report a laboratory investigation on key biomechanical characteristics of sport and exercise in humans. Identify and analyse key movement patterns occurring during sport performance and physical activities through application of motion capture techniques.
